The Route to the Arctic Circle | A Rolling Nomads Update from Friday Series #066

Morning readers, we’re checking in with fellow Rolling Nomads, Nell, Preston and Vera, traveling in their adventure van, Friday Series #066, “Elaine.” They’ve completed the first leg of their epic Dempster Highway journey and we are a little jealous but mostly in awe.

So far they’ve tackled a route that’s taken them from Dawson City to Tombstone Mountain Territorial Park through Eagle Plains and to the Arctic Circle.

Tombstone Mountain Territorial Park was a clear favorite. The family camped for two nights, hiked Goldensides and Grizzly Ridge, joined ranger talks, and made good use of the free firewood the campground provides for cozy nights round the fire.

Nell’s Tip: Reserve ahead if you can, since first-come sites fill quickly. If you miss out, the interpretive center has overflow parking, and in a Remote Van, roadside boondocking is always an option.

On Day 3, they drove five hours to Eagle Plains Lodge, a vital stop on the Dempster Highway with food, fuel, water and a cozy lounge. Even with all the conveniences of vanlife, the couple admitted that no dishes were a welcome break. Fuel planning is important on this road, but with a 400 – 450 mile range per tank, their van had plenty to cover the longest stretch of 230 miles between stations.

Behind the lodge they found one Arctic Circle marker, and just 35 km further another “official” crossing. But which one counts? As Rolling Nomad Nell says, “Who cares? You’re going to do both!”

Next up: Northwest Territory Crossing to Fort Macpherson. Stay tuned for more epic adventures from Friday Series #066.
