Discover Coronado: A Local Guide with Remote Vans®
A must visit when you are visiting San Diego, Coronado is located just across the bridge and is hands down our favorite area of San Diego! A couple of our Rolling Nomads lived on Coronado Island in the 80s and have shared their list of local favorites that are still around today. Here are their favorites, as well as spots we always hit more than once when on the island.
Seeing the Island
Rent Bikes
Our favorite way to see the island is to rent bikes and spend the day riding around the island. Orange Avenue is the main street lined with shops and local restaurants. The whole island is filled with charming houses and front yards that are beautifully maintained – we always spend our mornings looking at the houses! There is a bike lane through the main roads on the island, which is great when riding through the busier roads.
Some of our favorite spots to check out when riding bikes are:
- Orange Avenue
- Stop at Clayton’s side window for donuts and coffee
- Riding from Hotel del Coronado to Ferry Landing (you’ll ride by the golf course on the way!)
Things To Do
Coronado Beach: After biking around town, take a relaxing stroll along the golden sands of Coronado Beach. It’s one of the best beaches in the area, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Ferry from Coronado to Seaport Village: If you’re looking for a unique experience, take the ferry from Coronado to Seaport Village. The short ride offers fantastic views of the San Diego skyline and is a fun way to see the harbor from the water.
Hotel del Coronado: This historic hotel is an architectural masterpiece and a must-see while visiting the island. Whether you take a tour or simply explore the grounds, it’s an experience you won’t forget.
Concerts in the Park: If you’re visiting on a Sunday evening, don’t miss the free Concerts in the Park at Spreckels Park. Local bands perform from 6:00 pm, and it’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the island vibe.
Eats & Drinks: Coronado’s Culinary Scene
Coronado is home to some seriously delicious dining spots, and whether you’re craving casual eats or something more upscale, there’s something for everyone.
Our Top Picks:
- Clayton’s Coffee Shop: Clayton’s is a Coronado classic and has been around for years. Not only is it a dinner, but to the side of the building they have a cafe window for donuts/coffee and even a Mexican takeout section! Their side window is where locals and tourists alike get their morning coffee.
- McP’s Irish Pub: For a laid-back lunch or dinner, head to McP’s. With hearty pub fare and a friendly atmosphere, it’s a favorite for both locals and visitors.
- Danny’s Burgers: This hidden gem serves up some of the best burgers on the island. A local spot of the SEAL teams, you’ll see a wall paying tribute to our veterans.
- Coronado Brewing Company: A must for craft beer lovers, Coronado Brewing Company offers a wide range of brews, from light IPAs to rich stouts. We love grabbing food to go and bringing it to the beach with us!
